03 creating media 2022

this lesson we discussed lighting and how it effects a picture. From that i have decided that my picture will be quite light, with light filling the picture to establish an up beat  and cheery atmosphere. You can also change how much of a persons face is featured in the picture, to portray emotion and show my audience what the magazine could feature.

the title of my magazine is going to be called 'the deep' or 'salty at heart'  it is going to be about scuba diving and snorkelling.

title- climate change, what does it mean for humanity?

title- how can teenagers be more green?

title- Luna Williams environmentalist and her story

title- what can be done to save the oceans

title- snorkelers encounter a tremendous site in the south of france

tite- new climate change report means 'code red' for humanity.

i am going to include pictures of me snorkelling.

Cuffs adapts itself very suitably to fit its family audience at 8pm on BBC1. Cuffs is shown before 9pm meaning it has to keep to certain requirements to maintain  it's family friendly reputation  . In Cuffs, no blood, guts or heavy violence is shown throughout the series. For example, when the racists enters the shop to find a Indian man he decides to stab him but keeping the programme suitable for all viewers we do not get to see the stabbing actually happen, all we see is the owners of the shops son reaction to stabbing then the blood and the aftermath later on the floor. They very cleverly use the spillage of chilli powder to represent death rather than violent imagery. Another example of how Cuffs adapts police drama genre conventions is how the show does not include any bad language. Throughout Cuffs no sense of swearing or sexism is used making it fit its family audience at 8pm.  The regulators of BBC, BBC1, S4C, Channel 4 and other broadcasters if Ofcom who control what is allowed to be produced, at what time and on what channel. BBC1 keep to their regulations by involving no threatening scenes or harsh violence.  Cuffs is broadcasted at 8pm, I think this is the right time they should streaming due to it being later in the evening you (will get less youngers viewers watching) meaning less chance of what is shown to be affecting the audience. 8pm is close to the time where violent and threatening scenes are allowed to be shown so Cuffs fits very suitably into it’s regulations and requirements that Ofcom set Ofcom's morals are appropriately met, and therefore its enforced. Concluding that, Cuffs does adapt itself very suitably to fit its family audience at 8pm.

music magazines Analyse the media language of MOJO and the BBC magazine. Make judgements and draw conclusions about how far the media language is used differently to fit different kinds of music. (15)

The mojo magazine 'cure' covers punk/ rock music. contains vibrant colours, of orange black and white. These colours have connotations to fire and daringness, portraying this particular magazine to encourage individuality and confidence. The masthead is sans serif, and written in a bubble written font also suggesting individuality and freedom of expression. This largely ties in with the theme of mojo magazine, being based on rock music and modern trends. The modern style and themes within this magazine all link to rock , and share the same portrayal  of funk and light heartedness. Rock is all about freedom of expression, and the vast amount of colours and loud mastheads all relate to this. There is a large amount of background  colour during attention to the persons face. The person looks serious and important, and his makeup is different and intriguing. This draws people in because of the individuality. His look connotes to self destruction, and his stage image appears to be based on a story of a person who is desperately unhappy, and the whole cover suggests soon to be destruction hence the title 'why cant i be you?'. This may be relatable to many people, especially teenagers.  Therefore the media language of this poster shows us the theme and type of music this music is advertising.

In comparison, the second magazine is covering classical music. The layout is  sophisticated and modern. Its colours are light and airy, suggesting formality and tradition. The font shown is serif, further emphasising an orderly structure that is controlled and maintained. The person is pictured smiling and laughing, in order to draw people in. However, the normality of the image suggests that this person is not special, and does not express much individuality or freedom. However, this person is different because he is youthful and different to most musicians. His gesture and clothes all relate to youthfulness , and his stance is casual. This draws in readers because it is not what you'd usually expect.   The media language of this poster ties in to the character of classical music, because classical music is done in a controlled and airy environment. Therefore from this mojo magazine you are easily able to tell that this magazine is about classical music.

To conclude, these magazines both portray the style of music they are producing very well. They are very different, and present the people involved within them in very different lights. Classical music is presented through formality and in a traditional, whereas rock culture is presented through freedom and this can be seen through the liquidity and individuality of the cover.

references to woman

woman in the magazines

- woman are seen as objects in this magazine due to them only being pictures in lingerie ( Marshall and Snell grove)

- this suggests their only aim is to satisfy and look good for their husbands. This suggests they do not have a true purpose, and is extremely degrading to their image.

- there is a lack of ethnicity here, as not many different groups of people are shown. there are only two black people shown, this is not a considerable amount, and therefore there is minority of diversity.

- the dated term shows the age of the newspaper.

- queen Elizabeth is presented as a strong and independent woman

- lack of general diversity

03 brief 1

Monday the 15th march

For my front cover, I am going to include a picture of me scuba diving. There will be lots of colours in the background and I will include facts about scuba diving and why I enjoy it so much. I will try to persuade my reading audience to be more interested in scuba diving. With other facts like how it became a sport/hobby, how i started to get into it and all my passions for scuba diving. My double page spread will have lots of photos i have taken of scuba diving and all my facts I know about my hobby. Hopefully my front cover will be eye catching and will persuade the public to read.

my title is going to be -  the deep

my first paragraph is going to be about be about the general idea of scuba diving-
i am going to talk about PADI, which is the scuba diving course i took part in. PADI is a really helpful scuba diving course. I did the beginners course and the advanced open diving course. You also have to do written work for PADI. I sat around 2 exams before i was allowed to dive, and there were many instructors their guiding me through it.
Tips for diving would be to be confident and stay calm, if you do not remain calm then your breathing will speed up the rate your oxygen will decrease. Scuba diving is more than just a hobby, its something that is supposed to sooth you as you indulge into an underwater world you cannot see often. You get so much thrill and happiness from diving, and that is why it is my hobby.

here are some famous divers that i could talk about in my magazine

  • Victor Berge – Swedish diving pioneer and author (1891–1974) helmet diving
  • James F. Cahill – American scuba diving pioneer (1926–2008) credited with introducing scuba diving to the USA.[2]
  • Jacques-Yves Cousteau – Inventor of scuba-diving apparatus and film-maker (1910–1997)
  • Philippe Diolé – French author and undersea explorer (1908–1977)
  • Frédéric Dumas – French pioneer of scuba diving (1913–1991) spearfishing, wreck diving
  • Émile Gagnan – French engineer and co-inventor of the open circuit demand scuba regulator (1900–1979)
  • Gary Gentile – American author and pioneering technical diver (1946–) wreck diving
  • Bret Gilliam – Pioneering technical diver and author. (1951–)
  • Hans Hass – Austrian biologist, film-maker, and underwater diving pioneer (1919–2013) underwater photography
i could also talk about underwater photography and how it links to diving
pinterest quotes
dummy titles
- where blue meets green
- the greatest threat to the planet is the belief that someone else will save it
- with you i feel like flying
- ten coolest PADI specialities
what will PADI teach you to do? how can you stand out from the rest and test your limit?
- i breathe the ocean
- how to handle ocean washed hair
- joys of shore and diving without gear.
scuba diving facts that i could include in my article
  • Scuba stands for “Self contained underwater breathing apparatus”.
  • Sharks kill 8 to 12 people each year world wide. ...
  • Once you get below 10 metres depth, you can't see red or yellow!
  • Sound travels five times faster underwater than in air, which makes it almost impossible to establish where sound is coming from, as we rely on the time difference between our ears to do so.
  • Oxygen becomes toxic when under pressure, so at depths greater than 42 metres, special gases with low oxygen are used.
  • Jacques Cousteau invented Scuba gear in 1943, calling his cylinder the aqualung.
  • Nitrogen narcosis affects all divers – it’s the effect of Nitrogen being breathed at depths of more than 25 metres. It’s a little like being slightly drunk.
  • Children can learn to dive as young as 8 – the limiting factor is that they must be able to manage the weight of the equipment.
  • The Great barrier reef is the largest living organism on the planet, with a surface area greater than England.
  • The Gray Whale migrates more than 10,000 miles every year.
  • The diving equivalent of the mile high club is called the 20 metre club.

i could base some of my article on the risks of scuba diving, and the fear that is associated with it. You can feel very intimidated. especially when your surroundings are as vast as when your in the oceans. You are within other animals habitats, and you always need to be aware of your surroundings. My dad went scuba diving and was stung by a box jellyfish, and he had a huge scar on his arm for years. Scuba diving runs in my family, as well as injury.
i will be talking about what i am aware of when i am diving, and perhaps the storys of my family members experiencing issues and dangers when diving.

03 creating media

magazines- in my magazine i am going to be talking about scuba diving. I love the ocean and i love to dive. I did a diving course a few years ago in Greece, and since then i have had a passion for it. I have been able to get to grade 2, and i saw lots of really interesting creatures. The scenes i saw were beautiful, and i will never forget the experience it. In my magazine i am going to educate people who are interested in snorkelling and i am going to tell them about my personal experience. I am going to teach people about why they should get involved, and why i enjoyed it so much. the avengers

What is your impression of the sixties era?

my impression of the 60s was that it was a very colourful, happy and joyful time. Everyone was travelling, partying and experiencing new things. People were having fun and living their best lives. The clothes they wore were extremely funky, and truly represented their life style as a whole. Their clothes were colourful and stood out. No one was afraid to express themselves, and they aimed to dress to draw attention from others. The colours of these clothes would be especially bright, such as neon colours of orange yellow. This era as a whole was a new awakening for people, and people wanted to express their individuality and who they really were. Music was upbeat and fun but also had a deeper meaning.

Where does this come from?

my impression comes from the trailer that we watched, Austin towers. The colourfulness could be seen in the video,. and the joyful and outgoing atmosphere could be seen through it. The people within it looked happy and carefree, and we see in the background references which would make it clear it was the 60s. Their clothing and music taste all reflected the 80s style, and it really gave me an insight on what life would have been like for them. The comedy in the trailer shows us that this was a happy time, and people joked around and bounced off each other.

key events

Martin Luther King Jr, Cuban missile crisis, moon landings, the Vietnam war and civil rights protest

Five famous figures that associated with this era

John Lennon, Martin Luther King jr, Paul Mccartney, Neil Armstrong and John F Kennedy

cuffs

 chapter 5

how is audience sympathy with the police created?

The audience begins to have intense feelings of sympathy towards the police force in the scene when Jake is trying to arrest a woman committing a crime, however he is falsely accused of trying to sexually assault her as she frantically tries to escape her fate. Jake is an inexperienced police officer, and the audience may put themselves in his shoes, and feel sorry that the criminals are taking advantage of him for his naivety and inexperience. We as audience members may feel angered and slightly infuriated by this . Although this scene has been created to express signs of comedy, it is actually very sad that the woman feel like they can accuse Jake of such a thing. This could infer a poor society in which woman feel like it is appropriate to accuse Jake of these claims which could potentially ruin his career and life. It gives us an insight to how police are treated. Jake is just trying to do the just thing, and put things right,  however this is not appreciated by many of the people featured in this scene. As a result we express sympathy for Jake, and the police as a whole in this small section , because it is apparent their  feelings can be disregarded and taunted in moments like these.

television in the 2010s

  1. Explain technological convergence. [2]

Technological convergence means that television is available on television sets, gaming platforms and many types of tech. It means that you are able to stream certain shows or channels on many pieces of tech at a time.

2. Explain 'channel surfing'. [

Channel surfing when you skip past a certain channel in order to find the one you are looking for.

3. Give 3 examples of how channels create brand loyalty [6]

people are able to create brand loyalty because of the slandered of their shows and what they broadcast. If it is intriguing and suspenseful, it is likely that many of the views will keep on watching it. Channels also can create brand loyalty by using advertisements to tell people about these shows, and make sure the audience would be pleased to watch it.

4. What is 'long form television drama' ? [2]

Long form television is where it is designed to ensure that the loyalty remains to this program, as it is a long series of episodes that needs dedication  and loyalty for the viewers to watch it all.

5. What is a 'flagship' programme? [2]

Is a flagship programme is a program directed at a target audience of people. This program has been designed to appeal too this category, and therefore these viewers will be intrigued by the content and therefore remain loyal to the show or series.

6. In exchange for the licence fee, what does the regulator require of the BBC as a Public Service Broadcasting channel? [6]

It requires original programming, a mix of genres, arts and informational programming such as news, prime time and a good standard of program. Shows need to be a appropriate with a wide variety of programs that different people may like, therefore they will stay loyal to the channel.

01 TELEIVISON

We look at current news articles about the BBC and return to the OCR fact sheet on the television industry.

According to The Times newspaper this week,  watching TV live and in real time accounts for most TV viewing.

  1. What do you understand by the terms 'live' content and 'on demand' content
  2. live content is content broadcasted live, and on demand is content that has already been broadcasted that can be re watched on devices.
  3. What is the demand for 'live' content like?
  4. the demand for live content is fairly strong, this is because people look forward to certain shows at certain times, and people like to watch live shows as a family event.
  5. According to ratings research, there are 8 programmes cited as the top live shows for family viewing. How many have you watched? i have watched strictly come dancing, and Britain's got talent, Paddington 2 and the great British bake off.
  6. Apply Blumler and Katz's audience framework to what you learn from this article.
  7. the bumler and katz framework is used here because watching tv expresses social skills, because people are able to socialise and interact with eachother by using  tv. People may also form a relationship with certain characters or contestants during live Tv, and people can feel a togetherness whilst bonding over opinions and interpretations of the show. This is extremely important to maintain over this difficult time, and this corresponds with the blumer and katz framework of 'social interacting' and 'personal relationships'.

how is john lennon presented on the cover of mojo magazine?

how is john Lennon presented in the mojo magazine cover?

In this cover, John Lennon is presented as an important and well respected musician. His portrait takes up most of the page, and it is the first thing readers look at upon picking up the magazine. This portrays his importance, and shows him as an icon people should look up to. John Lennon's serious face represents maturity and seriousness, and this tells the readers that he is well respected, and has an importance that must be understood. There is no vivid splash of colour behind him, meaning that the designer of this magazine is deliberately trying to get us to look at his face and only his face. This contrasts to other musicians, because they usually are pictured to be more lively. This tells us about Lennon's character, and his own individuality and style.

The lighting makes the magazine look welcoming and not too harsh. This is suitable for older readers who are the main market for mojo magazine, this is because it is easy to understand and not overwhelming to the eyes. The main colours used are simple but effective, such as blues whites and oranges. These are the perfect balance of being vibrant but not blinding. The writing is clear and easy to read, and the splash of colour in the left hand corner really tells us about Lennon, and the type of character he is. Possibly a little about his background and work too.

in conclusion this cover is really effective at telling us who Lennon is as an artist, and portrays his individuality. The fact that he is centred and is the main focus of this cover shows that he's an icon and someone who people greatly look up to.

observer questions

1. The Guardian and Observer are owned by a trust set up in the 1930s, they are a liberal company and adapt this into their writing.

2. Press freedom means that the press are the most opinionated of all the old media. Newspapers can campaign on political issues and journalists are expected to give a balanced but critical view of important figures, such as those in power.

3. Online newspapers will use the traditional media language of newspapers. they use headlines, copy, photography and so on. They put the sections in order of importance, such as grouping the food and sport articles on a different page to the political story's.

4.  There are interviews, comedic opinion pieces and reviews of theatre, dance, music, cinema, architecture, computer games, and television listings. This appeals to many ages, and therefore people of all ages will feel like they should buy this newspaper. If there is a variety of different sections in the newspaper. This sections the topics and allows people to find the topics they are interested in

5 it allows the readers to read about topics that interest them and learn more about their interests. It allows them to discuss their interests with other people, and find people who relate to them and their hobbies. This is why people are attractive to platforms such as the observer.

6. The views can be active on the observers page, as they comment on the observer and if they want, share it.

the observer

 the observers features

Many younger people choose to access the observer online, because it is easier and more practical. There are many ways that you can use different features to look at the magazine in detail, an example being the zoom tool and the dictionary tool. You can read it at whatever distance you like, suiting to your eyesight. Young people with less word knowledge can also look, up words they are confused about. . Another feature is the retweet button. This button allows you to tweet the observers tweet which can expand the amount of people who will read it. If it is an interesting post, then the chances are it will be retweeted on a wider scale, creating publicity for the observer. Another feature that the online newspaper has is a chat box, where you can discuss the newspaper and have a chance to be able to interact with others. This allows many people to talk about their finding son the newspaper, and start conversations about the topic they find interesting. they also let people give an opinion, so the observer can adapt to others needs.

the observes twitter page

the observer has a large title page, drawing people in to the page and making it colourful and interesting to look at. The observer has an option were you can view the next title page of the next observer. This draws people in, and causes anticipation. People want to read the next paper because they've already been given a taste, and the title may grip and intrigue them. Twitter is a good platform to do this on because they are world wide,

uses and gratifications, lego movie video game

The Blumer and Katz theory suggests that people use media for gratifications. This can be seen in the Lego movie video game, which has been adapted by the Lego movie itself. The Lego movie video game includes many challenges and obstacles for the player to overcome, and therefore is very entertaining and appealing to young people. Elements of escapism, entertainment and diversion have been placed into this video game to make it more thrilling and to give the player a sense of adventure when fulfilling their tasks. An example of this is demonstrated when the player has to run away from lord business and fight off his businessmen, creating a sense of urgency and thrill. All video games include these elements, as it is entertaining for people because it is unlike their day to day experiences in real life, and gives them the boost and crave for adventure that their minds have been longing for and after watched their favourite characters fulfil

Another gratification from media is shared values and beliefs. We can identify with certain characters within video games, because they may share our personality traits and views. Players may want a certain set of values to be restored, and look up to these characters for their actions. An example of this in the Lego movie would be the character of Emmet. He is every young persons voice, and he teaches them that although they may be referred to as a 'loser' they can always be a hero. This enables small children to relate with Emmet and form a relationship with him as a character. This was adapted into the video game, and was a huge reason for its success. In the video game the player mainly plays the role of emmet because this is the character they look up to.

targeting audiences through the Lego movie ad break

8th January.

1. The British heart foundation, premier inn and confused dot com all paid for the costs of their adverts themselves. This tells us that each company had a strong desire to be apart of this, so much so they would provide payment themselves. This is because it was a revolutionary event, and something that had never been done before. They  wanted to be apart of this new idea, even id it meant putting money towards it. The brands also must have had a large amount of faith in the movie and believed they would make their money back otherwise they would not have taken the risk. Lego is also  much loved brand my children and adults alike, and the partnership will want to gain publicity to the brands. It is also family friendly expanding the amount of viewers.

2. yes, i think that this was a conscious decision from the marketing team behind the film. It was important that they stick to the theme of the movie when producing the ad break, and if they had not have used real Lego blocks it would have ruined the brand image of the movie. The Lego movies main marketing strategy is being produced differently to other movies, an example being how they mimic the look of Lego structures in the movie. This method is different and draws people in, which therefore needs to be maintained within the add break. It also gives people a sneak peak into the movie, and increases excitement because from the ad break you are able to tell the movies theme and certain elements about it. Therefore it was a conscious decision

3  The appearance of a character in each advert is important because it allows people to distinguish the link between the ad break and the movie. Keeping the brand name alive within the adverts would need to be extremely important for Lego. Adults and children alike may see a particular character they personally have a liking too, and relate that to the product and the movie. Therefore it is an effective market tragedy for both. It also gives people an insight on the character's that feature in the movie, and increases their excitement.

Statement of intent
